Outdoor albumen CDV of the Army of the Cumberland’s headquarters. Chattanooga, Tennessee, circa 1863.
This photo shows a man, presumably the Chief of Artillery, standing near rows of cannons at the Army of the Cumberland’s headquarters. If the man in the center of the photo is indeed the Chief of Artillery, then his name is Col. James Barnett (1821-1911). From Cleveland, Ohio, Barnett mustered as a colonel into the Field & Staff of the 1st Ohio Light Artillery first for a three-month service, then a three-year term. After the Battle of Perryville, Barnett was made Chief of Artillery of the Army of the Ohio, which would turn into the Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. William S. Rosencrans (1819-1898).
After the Siege of Corinth, Rosencrans took over the XIV Corps and the Department of the Cumberland, which he would transform into the Army of the Cumberland. The Army was divided into three “wings”: right, commanded by Alexander McCook (1831-1903); center, commanded by George H. Thomas (1816-1870); and left, commanded by Thomas L. Crittenden (1819-1893). Under Rosencrans, the Army fought at the Battles of Stones River and Chickamauga, as well as the Tullahoma and Chattanooga Campaigns. Rosencrans suffered losses at Chickamauga and Chattanooga, prompting Gen. Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) to replace him with George H. Thomas until the war’s end.
