Full-length standing albumen CDV portrait of George Armstrong Custer in Uniform as Captain. [Monroe, Michigan]: [William H. Bowlsby], [April 1863]. Unmarked. Modern pencil identification to verso. Katz K-10.
One of the earliest portraits of Custer in uniform during the Civil War. This image, judging by the angles of the trims made for an album, appears to be the same copy included in Katz's Custer in Photographs (K-10, p. 10). Taken in April 1863, he wears his uniform with his Captain's straps visible and holding his hat. His trademark personality is clearly evident both by his flashy striped tie and swagger-filled pose.
