General Orders, No. 316. War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D.C., 18 September 1863. 8vo. 98 pages unbound. 

 

A publication of the list of promotions in the United States Army issued on 18 September 1863, notably after the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg and the Siege of Vicksburg. 

 

Many noteworthy generals received promotion to Major General including Joseph Hooker, George Meade, Oliver O. Howard, Daniel Sickles, Winfield S. Hancock, and Abner Doubleday. 

 

Notably, George Armstrong Custer was promoted from 1st Lieutenant to Brigadier General on page 40. Additionally, Lt. Col. Rufus Ingalls, Col. Benjamin H. Grierson, 1st Lt. Judson Kilpatrick, and Capt. Elon J. Farnsworth were all listed for promotion to Brigadier General on the same page.
