A dynamic and frenetic painting that centers on a man on horseback brandishing a sword. He has his arm pulled across his chest, ready to swing to his right. Estrada emphasizes the claustrophobic chaos of battle, with the main subject surrounded only by other figures brandishing swords on horseback.
Marcos Pavón Estrada (Cuban, b. 1938) was a painter who overcame the loss of use of his hands due to polio by mastering mouth-painting from an early age. After receiving formal artistic training in Havana and graduating from the Fine Arts School in Holguín in 1969, he developed a unique style rich in rural mythology, portraying witches, elves, and figures drawn from local folklore. A member of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, Pavón created his own easel device to support his work and became known for celebrating Cuban folk traditions and imagination through his evocative compositions.
