A man and a woman wearing laborers' clothes embrace between two active smokestacks. Viewed as an explicitly socialist work, the artist implies the protective strength of their labor as foundational to their relationship. With the figures and smokestacks rendered in near equal heights, the artist underlines the equal significance of both labor and personal relationships.
Marcos Pavón Estrada (Cuban, b. 1938) was a painter who overcame the loss of use of his hands due to polio by mastering mouth-painting from an early age. After receiving formal artistic training in Havana and graduating from the Fine Arts School in Holguín in 1969, he developed a unique style rich in rural mythology, portraying witches, elves, and figures drawn from local folklore. A member of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, Pavón created his own easel device to support his work and became known for celebrating Cuban folk traditions and imagination through his evocative compositions.
