A striking and dynamic painting of four Cuban men on strike. One of the men in the back can be seen holding a banner, where the letters "H," "U" and "L" can be made out around a fist. This word is probably spelling out "huelga," which means "strike" in Spanish.
Pavón Estrada contracted polio and ended up hospitalized in 1963 — it was here that he had his first education in fine arts. Due to the lasting effects from polio that left his hands constantly shaking, Pavón Estrada paints using his mouth. But that did not stop him from enrolling and graduating from the Fine Arts School at Holguín in 1969. While he mainly paints scenes depicting witches, mythological creatures, and the supernatural, Pavón Estrada dabbles in historical and political works, like this painting. He cites his inspirations as Wifredo Lam, Amelia Peláez, and Víctor Manuel García Valdés. (Reinaldo Cedeño Pineda. Interview, Cuba Cultural Exchange Association, 2003).
