A beautiful landscape featuring a winding stream framed by two large bushes and palm trees on each riverbank. The horizon of the painting depicts a spanning landscape, littered with more palm trees and fields. The sky extends upwards, a beautiful blue filled with clouds.

Spanish artist Juan Gil Garcia (1876-1932) moved from Spain to Cuba late in the 19th century, where his theme of national landscape flourished in the presence of his new home. Drawn to the opulence of local fruits and flowers of Cuba, Garcia’s still lifes were transformed by the bright colors and beauty of the community he found himself a part of. While his work was regarded locally during his lifetime, a posthumous resurgence of popularity surrounding his work began to develop in the 1970s, with galleries hosting exhibits of his work throughout Cuba and in the United States.
