A stunning example of contemporary Cuban art. With muted shades of green, brown, purple, yellow, and orange, they are assembled together and outlined in black to create a stunning visual effect. With faint grid lines seemingly interesting each individual component, José Mijares (1921-2004) work engages the viewer with its dynamic use of color and shape.
José Mijares was a Cuban contemporary artist who began his artistic journey as an adolescent after receiving a scholarship that allowed him to study drawing at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts. Participating in the influential group, Los Diez Pintores Concretos, Mijares and his fellow artists served as influential creators in Cuba's history in its pre-Castro years. Though acting as a teacher at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts throughout his career, Mijares eventually elected to give up his position when Fidel Castro came into power. It was not long after this that he would leave Cuba and take up residence in Miami, where his artistic career would continue to flourish until his death.
