Charles Royal, editor. The Royal's World Countdown. 2 issues. Vol 3, nos. 3 & 8. [Los Angeles]: Charles Royal, [July 1967 and January 1968?].
Two vibrant issues of the counterculture music newspaper Royal's World Countdown published in Los Angeles by British transplant Charles Royal. Belying its original billing as "the First Worldwide Big Beat Newspaper," the paper is quite obscure and difficult to collate. Early issues are unnumbered and most, including the present issues, are undated. First issued monthly, it was later issued fortnightly and distributed via newstands in LA and San Francisco, most notably the World News & Book Store and the Psychedelic Shop on Haight St., respectively.
Vol. 3 No. 3 features a high-contrast portrait of Bob Dylan against a vivid gradient background. Vol. 3, No. 8 includes a photographic collage of music stars including Jim Morrison and John Lennon, surrounded by architectural and vining illustrations.
A fine and extremely scarce psychedelic collectible.
