Illustrated by Maurice Bower (1889-1980), this edition of the Saturday Evening Post features three weathered Civil War veterans, standing in formation, marching and drumming with the American Flag streaming behind them. Dressed in uniform, the GAR emblem can be seen on two of their hats, with their medals honoring their distinction in service. Notable too is the mention of American writers Conrad Richter (1890-1968) and George S. Brooks (1895-1961), who were regular contributors to the Saturday Evening Post.
2. after Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1915)
"Robert E. Lee on Traveller" Saturday Evening Post cover
20 January 1940
Cover, 10 1/4 x 13 1/2 in., framed and matted to 15 1/2 x 18 3/4 in.

Illustrated by Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1915), this edition of the Saturday Evening Post features Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) astride his horse Traveller, standing upon a fallen flag and a monument with the Confederate general's name and life dates. Likening the many monuments of Lee scattered around the South, the Confederate general is brought to life in the particular style of illustration that was featured on the covers of the Saturday Evening Post. Notable too is the featured article written by Alva Johnston on Orson Welles (1915-1985).
3. after Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1915)

Also illustrated by Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1915), this edition of the Saturday Evening Post features two Civil War Veterans, dressed in their uniforms and proudly marching ahead, despite their aged appearances. Upon the flute player's cap are the initials "GAR," The Grand Army of the Republic, surrounded by laurels. The featured article, written by Samuel G. Blythe (1868-1947), titled "W. Wilson--Human Being" covers the newly inaugurated President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924).
