Brady

Portrait of a dandy

Watercolor and gouache on vellum or paper

19th century

2 3/4 x 3 1/2 in., framed to 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 in.

In a sixth plate brass mat and frame

This painting of a dandy is almost certainly painted after a photograph, suggested by both the pose and the presentation in a cased image mat and frame. To the right of the portrait, near the man's left arm, is the signature "Brady." Whether this is the signature of the artist or meant to be a full recreation of a Brady image is lost to time.
