J.E. Parker Doyle, writer, and J. Henry Whittemore, composer. The Old Flag Will Triumph Yet. Detroit, MI: J. Henry Whittemore, [1863]. 6 pages, approx. 10 3/16 x 13 1/4 in. Dedicated to Colonel T. F. Brodhead on the cover page.

Featured prominently on the cover sheet is a lithograph of Brodhead by C. Inger.

Thornton Fleming Brodhead (d. 1862) had previously served in the Mexican-American War, being brevetted to the rank of captain. At the breakout of the Civil War, he abandoned his career in politics and organized the 1st Michigan Cavalry Regiment. The 1st Michigan engaged in a number of the War's most crucial battles, including Second Bull Run, at which Brodhead would sustain fatal gunshot wounds.

The lyrics of "The Old Flag Will Triumph Yet" morbidly paraphrase the alleged last letter sent by a dying Brodhead to his brother. A full transcription of the letter is printed above the music.

[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Broadsides, Ephemera, Printing, Posters, Handbills, Documents, Pamphlets, Publications, Booklets, Sheet Music]
