The reverse carries a clean Pope Brothers backmark.
The 124th New York, recruited almost entirely from Orange County, carved out an immortal combat reputation within the Army of the Potomac. The operational record of the men identified in this grouping touches every phase of the regiment's organizational lifecycle. Surgeon John Hudson Thompson of Goshen was the medical anchor of the regiment, managing the horrific influx of casualties from Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, having previously served with the 40th New York. Chaplain Thomas Scott Bradner provided spiritual counsel through the regiment's bloodiest campaigns, while Lieutenants Ellis Post (Company E) and Jonathan F. Grier (Company G) navigated the high-attrition tactical duties of line command.
The inclusion of the striking first sergeant portrait alongside the core staff officers offers a fantastic study in regimental stratification. Enhanced by premium, highly localized Hudson Valley photographic backmarks from Lawrence and Pope Brothers in Newburgh, this 6-CDV grouping serves as a premier ready-made display archive for advanced collectors of the "Orange Blossoms."
