1. Captain Henry F. Travis (Vignette Bust Portrait): Vignette bust portrait albumen CDV. Newburgh, NY: Pope Brothers, Washington Hall, [ca. 1864]. A sharp, well-preserved vignette study of Travis in a double-breasted officer's frock coat with captain's shoulder straps and a trimmed goatee. The reverse bears an inverted Pope Brothers backmark adorned with an original blue two-cent Washington proprietary revenue stamp. It is enhanced by a period ink presentation signature reading "Henry F. Travis / Capt. Co. I 124th / NYVols."
2. Captain Henry F. Travis and Lieutenant Josiah M. Dickey: Full-length seated group portrait albumen CDV. Newburgh, NY: Pope Brothers, Washington Hall, [ca. 1864]. An extraordinary marketplace find capturing two local officers interacting in a stylized studio setting. Travis is seated at the right, gesturing with a cigar toward his comrade, while Lieutenant Josiah M. Dickey of the 15th New York Heavy Artillery sits opposite him. The reverse features a matching Pope Brothers backmark overlaid with a red two-cent Washington revenue stamp. It carries period ink identifications reading "Captain Travis / Lieut JM Dickey" alongside later graphite verification mapping both units: "Henry F. Travis 124 NY / Josiah M. Dickey 15 NY HA."
3. Captain Henry F. Travis (Full-Length Standing Study): Full-length standing studio portrait albumen CDV. Newburgh, NY: Lawrence, [ca. 1864]. A commanding, high-contrast study of Travis standing at ease in a sack coat with shoulder straps, resting his hand against a massive fluted studio column next to a draped curtain. His officer's slouch hat rests on an ornate table beside him. The reverse features a clean, stylized central Lawrence backmark under a graphite identification reading "Capt Henry F. Travis / 124th NY."
Henry F. Travis features prominently in the hard-fought combat history of the Orange County regiment. He entered the service at mobilization, mustering in as First Lieutenant of Company I on 5 September 1862. He stood at the front through the bloodiest tactical crises faced by the Army of the Potomac, surviving the desperate defense of Houck's Ridge at Gettysburg and the brutal hand-to-hand combat of the Overland Campaign. He was promoted to Captain of Company I in September of 1863, and was later wounded in action during the Siege of Petersburg on 2 October 1864. Travis successfully steered his company through the final campaigns in Virginia, mustering out with the regiment at Washington in June of 1865.
The inclusion of the intimate double portrait with Lieutenant Dickey of the 15th New York Heavy Artillery adds intrigue. Dickey, hailing from nearby Cornwall, New York, originally served with the 124th New York as an enlisted man in Company C before gaining a commission in the heavy artillery. This portrait beautifully captures a hometown reunion between two veteran officers on leave or detached duty.
Unified by hyper-localized Newburgh photographic imprints, this archive of a hard-fought "Orange Blossom" represents a premier ready-made archive for advanced collectors, whether specializing in the 124th New York or Civil War photography in general.
