A group of art objects from Private Geoge Wallen, 7th Connecticut Infantry. Handsomely presented in a modern shadowbox frame, 15 7/16 x 19 1/2 in. Items include:
1. Pencil sketch of a Union camp. At center, a soldier plays with a dog beneath a waving American flag. Two other figures walk among outbuildings, tents, and trees. Telegraph lines are visible in the background.
2. Manuscript note reading: "Property of Pvt. George Albert Wal[len] Killed in Civil War."
3. Four (4) carved wood trinkets.
Private George A. Wallen enlisted with the 7th Connecticut Infantry on 2 September 1861, mustering into Company K. The regiment captured Fort Pulaski and occupied in 1862 before fighting at the Battle of Secessionville.
On 11 July 1863, Wallen and his company fought alongside the 54th Massachusetts (the first all Black regiment) at the bloody Assault on Fort Wagner, with the regiment suffering 103 casualties out of 191 officers and men engaged. He re-enlisted in December 1863 and tragically died of an accidental wound received on 14 January 1864.
A nice assemblage of soldier's art.
