Half plate hand-tinted ambrotype. Plate 4 ¼ × 5 ½ in. Full leatherette case.
Sharp portrait of a Union infantry officer, pictured from the knees up. The single bar on his shoulder boards indicates his rank as a First Lieutenant, while an infantry hunting horn insignia peeks out beneath the folds of his broken-in forage cap. The mustachioed officer displays his unsheathed M1850 officer's sword for the lens, which was so well-focused that the details of the frosted blade can be seen with the naked eye. A nicely-tinted officer's sash completes the man's distinguished look. This is a very impressive Civil War image with excellent wall power - the plate weighs in at a stout 4¼" × 5½", making it far larger than its much more common peers.
