John Wellman Lyman initially enlisted as a surgeon with the 57th Pennsylvania Infantry, serving with the regiment until he accepted a commission as the Lt. Col. of the 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry. On 15 January 1865, during the Battle of Fort Fisher, he was shot through the heart while leading his new regiment in an assault on the fifth traverse.
