.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with Maynard automatic priming mechanism, M1855 pattern long range rear sight, Barleycorn front sight, sling swivels and a full-length straight shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked "U.S. / HARPERS FERRY" forward of the primer magazine, with a {Spread Winged Eagle} on the magazine door and dated "1860"  at the tail. Barrel with no date or US proofs but with what Murphy & Madaus refer to as the Richmond Armory "3rd Reinspection Mark", a five-pointed star on the left angled breech flat. The stock shows a clear script "WPT" cartouche on the counterpane, the mark of Springfield sub-inspector William P Taylor, who inspected Springfield Model 1861, 1863 and 1864 rifle muskets. He may have inspected some late production Model 1855 Rifle muskets, as this stock appears to be an 1855 stock, rather than a modified 1861 stock. The gun is a classic example of a Confederate rebuilt rifle musket, with the Richmond "star" mark on the breech of a barrel that could have originated at either Springfield or Harpers Ferry, a Harpers Ferry lock, a Springfield stock and a Springfield rear sight. The ramrod shows delamination near the tulip head and may be Richmond produced example. Overall this is a solid example of a Richmond rebuilt rifle musket that is every bit as Confederate as a Richmond-made gun is, and at a much more obtainable price. {ANTIQUE]

Very Good. Bore good, moderately oxidized with some scattered pitting and decent rifling. Metal moderately oxidized with speckles of freckled oxidation and discoloration over a pewter gray barrel and showing some scattered surface roughness and some light pitting. Markings remain mostly clear and legible. Lock is mechanically functional, including the tape priming mechanism. Wood with some wear, but relatively crisp with good edges, showing a moderate gouge in the reverse butt and scattered bumps, dings and mars from handling and use.
