North Carolina UCV cockade. Red & white silk, with celluloid disc. North Carolina: n.p., 1915. Overall approx. 6 x 11 7/8 in. Diam. celluloid disc 1 1/2 in.
An enormous and elaborate red and white silk cockade with alternating red and white gilt-printed silk pennants with gold bullion tassels. At center is a celluloid disc with a portrait of General Julian Shakespeare Carr (1845-1924) with the legend "J.S. Carr." Gilt printing across pennants reads: "N.C. Div. U.C.V. / First At Bethel / Last at Appomattox / The Tar Heel Boys / Richmond, VA. / June 1-2-3, 1915."
Another known example was included in a complete, identified North Carolina UCV uniform that displayed the cockade worn on the hip with a shoulder sash gilt printed "N.C. Div. U.C.V. / Gen. Carr's Staff."
One of the best UCV ribbons we have encountered.
