Confederate cavalry saber, loosely patterned after the United States m1840 cavalry saber. [North Carolina]: [Louis Froelich], n.d. Blade 35 in. Overall 42 3/16 in. long.

These distinct Confederate edged weapons are known in collecting circles as  "Kenansville," "Froelich" or "Confederate States Armory" sabers. Produced by  Bavarian immigrant Louis Froelich, the swords are immediately recognizable by their pointed oval counterguards marked with Roman numeral bench numbers, smooth, unassuming pommels, and knucklebows which branch at two distinct points. This example is numbered "V" to the counter guard and scabbard throat.

The sword is in overall fine condition. The blade and guard display subtle dark patinas. While it has been significantly eroded by the original single wire wrap, traces of the dyed pig skin over the wooden grip are present. The wood reflects some cracking but is stable.
