M1850 non-regulation officer's sword. [Germany]: N.p., n.d. Spine etched "Iron Proof". Single letter "E" legibly stamped to ricasso. Spear tip. Blade 31 3/4 in. Overall 38 7/8. in.
The blade exhibits a dark patina towards the tip and in scattered spots throughout. It bears acid etching to both sides, including a spread-winged eagle with a federal shield on the obverse, with ribbands reading "E Pluribus Unum" etched above the eagle, and "US" etched on the reverse. The brass guard, which exhibits some wear and light verdigris, bears an eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, with an "E Pluribus Unum" riband above and the letters "US" below. Original leather washer is present. The grip is shagreen and, although it retains its original double-strand wire wrap, the non-coiled strand is split and deformed, and there is some verdigris to the coiled strand.
The "Iron Proof" etching observed on the spine of this sword, testifying to the sword's ability to cut through iron, indicates that the blade was produced in Solingen. The style of the guard is consistent with other non-regulation m1850s imported by the Union from German manufacturers.
