M1840 heavy cavalry saber. Cabotville, [Massachusetts]: N. P. Ames, 1848. Ricasso stamped: "N. P. Ames / Cabotville / 1848". Ricasso reverse with government stamps: "US / WD". Pommel cap marked "WD / JWR". Blade 35 5/8 in., overall 43 in. long.
Complete in scabbard. The blade exhibits a smooth, grey tone. There are traces of verdigris to the guard, notably around the leather washer. The leather washer is present, albeit minorly damaged as shown. Original grip leather and partial wire wrap remain; where the original wire terminates, a replacement has been soldered.
Known informally as "Wristbreakers," m1840 cavalry sabers were used during the Mexican-American War and saw continued popularity throughout the Civil War despite the introduction of their replacement, the m1860 light cavalry saber.
