The interior front cover is inscribed as follows: "From / Col. Jno. C. Chadwick / 92nd U. S. Cold. Inft'y."
John Clark Chadwick (1833-1904) enlisted as a lieutenant colonel and was commissioned into the 92nd United States Colored Troops Infantry Regiment on 24 October, 1863. The regiment was attached to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the Corps d'Afrique, Department of the Gulf, then the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, United States Colored Troops, Department of the Gulf. Chadwick led the regiment through the Red River Campaign. Per other attributed writings, Chadwick held a great deal of pride for the men of the 92nd.
The 92nd U.S.C.T. mustered out on 31 December 1865. Chadwick would go on to become an active G.A.R. member in the local Post 34 in Salem, Massachusetts.
