An uncommon "popular narrative" (Nevins) of the 1864 Franklin Campaign, written by Levi T. Scofield, who served as an engineering officer under Jacob D. Cox in the XXIII Corps. Originally presented as a lecture given to the Ohio Commander of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion (MOLLUS) in 1886 and published the same year, this first book edition is greatly expanded and profusely illustrated. Ryan notes the work "is an important and interesting contribution to Civil War history by an active participant in the movements described."
