AFFECTIONATELY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR to the front free endpaper, dated October 1866: "In the old days - they seem old now - when you and I were following the General I never thought of telling the story of our ride when we should reach the end of it. But I have recklessly done it, for want of better Employment, and I send you this book as a remembrance of the good times to which I look back with. / Fond affection and recollection, Yours truly, F. C. Newhall."
A vehement defense and vindication of Major General Philip Sheridan, written by Frederick C. Newhall (1840-1898), who enlisted with the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry and rose through the ranks to become Sheridan's aide-de-camp (May 1864) and later assistant adjutant (February 1865). The account includes detailed descriptions of several of the Valley Campaign battles, including Five Forks and Saylor's Creek.
This copy features a lengthy and excellent presentation inscription by Newhall to a fellow veteran, identified only as "Tom."
Scarce in the trade, only 2 copies sold at auction since 1973.
