A selection of pins, badges, and ephemera from the 1901 United Confederate Veterans (UCV) reunion held in Memphis, Tennessee, collected by Veteran W.C. Dorion, with several items related to Nathan Bedford Forrest. Handsomely framed, items include:
1. Nameplate of W.C. Dorion.
Willoughby C. Dorion (1838-1910) enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant and was commissioned into Company B of the 4th Tennessee Infantry, known as Neely's Regiment. The regiment was hard fought, losing almost half of its effective forces at the Battle of Shiloh, including Dorion, who was wounded in action on April 6th. He was discharged due to his wounds, though the date is not recorded.
After the war, he returned to Bolivar, Tennessee, where he was the Secretary and Treasurer of the Memphis and Knoxville Railroad Company, where he reunited with his former commander, "At least we very well and truly know that Gen. Neely is one of the best and livest working Railroad men in the State, and W.C. Dorion is a true, working straightforward, upright reliable man, who will do his whole duty anywhere." (Bolivar Bulletin, 26 January 1872).
Interestingly, Dorion died on 16 May 1910, just days before the UCV Reunion in Memphis was about to commence. One can speculate that he was planning on attending, especially as he lived not far from Memphis. Perhaps the souvenirs were acquired by his fellow veterans and returned to his family as a remembrance.
2. Two (2) U.C.V. 11th Reunion printed celluloid commemorative scrolls.
Featuring a portrait of Confederate cavalry commander Nathan Bedford Forrest surrounded by a wreath of laurels and First National Confederate Flag ("Stars and Bars"), the Second National Confederate Flag ("The Stainless Banner"), and the Battle Flag of Forrest's Cavalry Corps.
3. Four (4) UCV enamel and brass buttons. [Newark, New Jersey: Whitehead & Hoag, 1901].
With "UCV" vertical logo on a red and white enameled field, surrounded by legend, "Memphis / 1901." Originally with a stick pin soldered to the reverse and designated as the "official button" on the reverse.
4. Two (2) "Souvenir" United Confederate Veterans 2-piece brass and enamel badge.
Suspension bar reads "Souvenir". Medal features enameled Confederate flag at center surrounded by the legends: "ANNUAL / NATIONAL / REUNION / MAY 28-31, 1901" and "UNITED CONVEDERATE VETERANS / MEMPHIS, TENN."
5. Three (3) U.C.V. printed celluloid pinbacks.
Featuring a portrait of Varina Anne "Winnie" Davis (1864-1898), the youngest daughter of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who became known as the "Daughter of the Confederacy" in the late 19th century. Her profile bust portrait is superimposed between the Second National Confederate Flag ("The Stainless Banner") and the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, with the legend "U.C.V. / MEMPHIS / 1901."
6. Confederate Flags. Printed illustration.
An illustration of the First, Second, and Third National Confederate Flags alongside the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia.
[Relics, Militaria] [Medals, Corps Badges, Badges, Ribbons] [Veterans, Veterans’ Organizations, Fraternal Organizations] [GAR, Grand Army of the Republic] [UCV, United Confederate Veterans, UDC, United Daughters of the Confederacy] [Civil War, Union, Confederate]
Not examined out of frame. Unable to ascertain how the buttons, pinbacks, or badges are mounted or the presence (or absence) of original hardware.
