At the start of the war, the Frederick City lawyer formed the Confederate 1st Maryland Infantry, of which he would be made colonel. On the brink of mutiny at the expiry of their initial term at the Battle of Front Royal, Johnson gave a rousing speech to his men that reignited their loyalties. They would go on to see heavy action at the First Battle of Winchester, the Battle of Cross Keys, and many engagements throughout the Peninsular Campaign, including the Seven Days Battles and the Second Battle of Bull Run. He was promoted to brigadier general on 28 June 1864, and after his military service to the Confederacy, he dabbled in Democratic politics in the Virginia senate.
