Albumen photograph after 'In Memoriam' by John C. McRae. Approx. 8 x 10 in., mounted to 9 1/2 x 12 3/4 in. Pencil inscription to mount verso reads: "The Confederate Banner taken in flight".
At center, the Second National Confederate Flag, poetically referred to as the "Stainless Banner," rises through a cloudy, starlit night sky, encircled by other vignettes by McRae, titled: "A charge in the wilderness," "The crater,' 'The fight in Hampton Roads,' and 'After the surrender.'
The original mezzotint engraving was designed in 1867 by John C. McRae, an artist who specialized in historical vignettes and portraits.
