A group of two (2) of Civil War-era sabers, including:

1. French m1822 light cavalry sword. Klingenthal, [France]: Coulaux & Co., [1860-1887].  No marks to ricasso nor reverse; engraved along spine, "Coulaux & Co. Klingenthal". 3 bar brass guard. Blade 36 in., overall 43 1/2 in. long.

Complete in scabbard. The blade is clean. The guard is intricately engraved with a foliate motif and presents spots of light verdigris. Both the leather washer and original horn grip are present, though the grip lacks its wire wrap. There is slight discoloration and a small dent where the second bracelet was removed.

The French model 1822 saw production through the 19th and into the 20th century, albeit with periodic alterations. The rounded nature of its fuller indicates that this example was produced after 1860, but evidence to the scabbard of a second bracelet suggests that its manufacture predated the mass removal of the second bracelet in 1887, as all subsequently-produced scabbards would have only one to begin with. Though m1822 sabers were imported for use by both the Union and Confederate cavalries, the removal of its second bracelet was an exclusively French practice and suggests that this sword remained in the service of France.

2. M1840 light artillery saber. [C]abotvi[lle, Massachusetts: N. P. Ames, 1]84[?]. Stamps to the ricasso of "Cabotville" and a date in the 1840s partially legible. No perceptible marks to ricasso reverse. Pommel cap marked "WD / JWR". Scabbard inscribed: "Lewis". Blade 32 in., overall 40 in. long.

Complete in scabbard. The blade exhibits wear consistent with a modern attempt to clean or polish abrasively. The guard has a mellow patina, with traces of verdigris where the leather washer, which is absent, would have been. The grip retains its original leather and wire wrap.

Unlike their m1840 heavy cavalry counterparts, the m1840 light artillery saber did not see a replacement produced before or during the Civil War. They were the regulation swords of both Union and Confederate mounted artillery units.
