Illustrated lettersheet, approx. 4 3/4 x 7 3/4 in., featuring a black bust portrait of a dour beardless Lincoln above text "Abraham Lincoln." The "Beardless Lincoln" design was used for several different types of campaign covers often with text variations during Lincoln's 1860 presidential campaign. Images were sometimes then repurposed for patriotic usage after his election, as is the case here. Lincoln began to grow a beard in late 1860, and by his March 1861 inauguration he had a full beard. MILGRAM AL-38.
The 2pp letter, sent from New Hampshire on 14 February [18]62, relates to a business transaction. Cyrus Linton (1825-1914) of Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio, was a farmer, coal and grain dealer, and a Quaker. F.H. Fink writes to Linton regarding the sale of a mare. Accompanied by matching cover addressed to Linton.
A classic early image of Lincoln on desirable Lincoln illustrated stationery.
