Abolitionist John Brown began preparing for his eventual raid on Harpers Ferry in 1857. In addition to gathering 198 breech-loading .52-caliber Sharps carbines, he ordered 1,000 pikes from Connecticut blacksmith Charles Blair. Paying in installments, he eventually raised enough money for 954 pikes which were shipped to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, then transported to Brown's base of operations at a farm in Maryland. Ultimately, Brown and his band of men did not use the pikes during the fateful raid.
