James P. Richardson was mustered into Company A of the 10th South Carolina Infantry in the summer of 1861. The regiment was trained by Colonel Manigault and cadets from the Citadel, earning it a reputation for discipline. It then joined the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater. After the Siege of Corinth, it was transferred to Chattanooga and fought at the Battle of Murfreesboro. Richardson was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 15 March 1863. While fighting at Chickamauga with his regiment later that year, he was wounded.
He was not present when his regiment fought at Missionary Ridge due to his wounds, but he rejoined in 1864 as they attempted to repulse Sherman's advance during the Atlanta Campaign. Richardson was wounded again on 28 July, 1864 at Ezra Church near Atlanta.
An excellent identified Confederate uniform grouping.
