The Confederate frock coat, kepi, rain cover, sash, and other effects of James P. Richardson, 10th South Carolina Infantry. Items include:

1. Confederate regulation double-breasted gray wool frock coat. Charleston, South Carolina: D.D. Carr. Worn label sewn to lining. Shoulders 16", sleeve length 25", sleeve at widest 7", skirt length 19".

The coat has seventeen buttons, including thirteen original Confederate Infantry buttons (Albert CS 177). One cuff button survives. Collar, cuff facings, exterior edge welts, and interior front facing are faded dark blue worsted wool serge. Twill woven wool/silk and wool batting lining with deterioration and some restoration. Trimmed for the rank of lieutenant with hand-sewn braid to collar and sleeves. An intact tag on the jacket's collar indicates it was made by Charles D. Carr, a tailor in Charleston, South Carolina.

2. Confederate officer's private purchase chasseur-style kepi.

Blue wool felt chasseur-style, black silk tape trim, braided gold piping Austrian-knot quatrefoil. Tarred leather visor, leather chinstrap (with restoration) with brass South Carolina state seal buttons. Remnants of tarred linen sweatband. Black and white plain weave fabric lining, crown lining is missing. Inscribed on crown interior in modern hand: "Lt. James P.l Richardson / C.A. 10th S.C. / C.D. Carr / Charleston, S.C. / 1863."

3. Kepi rain cover.

Tarred linen rain cover for kepi. Snugly fit with two holes on either side to slot over kepi buttons.

4. Officer's crimson sash with tassels.

5. Oversized vignette albumen bust-length portrait. Modern ink inscription on the lower margin reads: "Lt. James Preston Richardson / Great Great Grandfather to Janet Preston (Mother's Side)."

6. C.I. Walker. Rolls and Historical Sketch of the Tenth Regiment, So. Ca. Volunteers in the Army of the Confederate States.  [Charleston, SC]: [Evans & Cogswell], [1881]. 12mo. Heavy wear with extensive conservation. Modern library binding. First edition.

James P. Richardson was mustered into Company A of the 10th South Carolina Infantry in the summer of 1861. The regiment was trained by Colonel Manigault and cadets from the Citadel, earning it a reputation for discipline. It then joined the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater. After the Siege of Corinth, it was transferred to Chattanooga and fought at the Battle of Murfreesboro. Richardson was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 15 March 1863. While fighting at Chickamauga with his regiment later that year, he was wounded.

He was not present when his regiment fought at Missionary Ridge due to his wounds, but he rejoined in 1864 as they attempted to repulse Sherman's advance during the Atlanta Campaign. Richardson was wounded again on 28 July, 1864 at Ezra Church near Atlanta.

An excellent identified Confederate uniform grouping.
