David Henry Ansley (1824-1897) of Richmond County, Georgia enlisted with the 5th Georgia Infantry quickly after the outbreak of hostilities and was commissioned into Company A as a First Lieutenant on 11 May,1861. His regiment served in Florida and the Western Theater through the early years of the war. Ansley was promoted to Captain on 15 June 1862, and again to Major on 31 December 1862.
After suffering severe losses at the Battle of Chickamauga, the regiment participated in the Siege of Chattanooga. During the Battle of Missionary Ridge, it was driven from its position, and Ansley was severely wounded by a rifle ball to his left hip. The evidence of this wound is still remarkably visible on his uniform, which bears the bullet hole, blood stains, and fabric tears from the doctor's efforts to reach the wound.
After recovery, Ansley was commissioned into the Veteran Reserve Corps on 14 September 1864, but retired in March 1865 due to the continued struggles caused by his war wound.
