[CIVIL WAR] Virginia Officer's Revolver & Effects

Provenance: Bought by author William "Bill" Turner in 1976 from a family estate. Sold in Heritage Auctions' 2006 December Signature Civil War Auction #642, Lot 25525. 

 

Stellar grouping related to Lt. Thomas H. Kirkpatrick of Co. "E" in the 26th Virginia Battalion (George S. Patton Sr.'s Brigade). Items include: 

 

1. Inscribed Colt Army Revolver, serial #60281, 1862 production. Nice, uniform patina throughout with patent stampings & engraved scene and matching serial number. Initials "TK" carved into the top of the grip. 

 

2. Original leather holster with brass stud and closed toe. Leather in good condition.

 

3. The Gospel According to St. John. N.p.: N.p., ca 1861-1865. 32mo (H. 3 3/8 in.) Period dark brown cloth gilt-lettered. Period pencil inscription to front free endpaper: "Thomas Kirkpatrick / Book / Lt. Co. E, 26th Va. Batt / Presented by / Our Chaplain / Parson Blanton".

 

Stellar grouping carried by Lt. Kirkpatrick throughout the Civil War as he served in the 26th Virginia Battalion under Col. George S. Patton, namesake and of the famous WWII General. Lt. Kirkpatrick was wounded during the Battle of Kearnstown in 1864 and hospitalized at Winchester. He later fought side by side with the Virginia Military Institute Cadets during the Battle of New Market.
