Corked glass vial filled with gunpowder. [Port Hudson, Louisiana, 1863.] Port Hudson. Vial approx. 8 1/4 cm. Paper label with modern inscription: "Port Hudson Powder."

 

WITH Two (2) .69 caliber cartridges. [Port Hudson, Louisiana, 1863.] Vial approx. 8 1/4 cm. Cartridges range from 6 to 6 3/4cm. 

 

WITH Manuscript note. Port Hudson, Louisiana, July 1863. Approx. 2 1/2 x 10 1/4 cm. In full: "Rebel Cartridge + powder, from Port Hudson/ July 1863."

 

The Siege of Port Hudson took place from 22 May to 9 July 1863. It was the last stronghold maintained by the Confederates on the vital Mississippi River. The successful siege by General Banks returned control of the vital waterway to Federal forces.
