A pair of pasteboard boxes containing a combined 52 .50 caliber metallic rimfire cartridges:
1. Forty-two-count box of Smith & Wesson patent 56-50 Spencer rounds. Label to top reads as follows: "Forty-Two / Smith & Wesson's / Patent Metallic / Primed Cartridges / Patented April 17, 1860. / For Spencer Carbine – Calibre 50. / Model 1865. / Manufactured by C. D. Leet, Springfield, Mass." Approx. 4 5/8 x 1 7/8 x 4 7/16 in.
Inside the box are six (6) smaller, unopened boxes, each holding five (5) cartridges. The bottom of the box is partially detached, and there is wear to the lid along two of the seams; otherwise a very fine example. The included cartridges were designed for use with the m1865 Spencer repeating carbine.
2. Ten-count box of Poultney's patent cartridges. Label to top reads as follows: "10 / Poultney's Metallic / Cartridges / Patented December 15th, 1863; / 12 Caps / for / Gallager's Breech Loading Carbine. / 50/100 Calibre."
There is some separation to the top of the box, allowing for the inspection of the stacked cartridges inside. The cartridges held within were intended to be used with the Civil War-era breech-loading Gallager carbine.
