Dark brown leather-bound sewing kit. Several needles still in push-pin. Identification faded but present on inside flap. Approx. 4 1/2 in. x 1 3/4 x 2 3/4 in.
Sewing kits were essential to soldiers for minor repairs to uniforms and clothing. Not issued by the army, they were made by mothers, sisters, wives, and sweethearts and were popular going-away gifts to departing soldiers who nicknamed them “housewives.”
Myrick Plummer was mustered into the Maine 19th Infantry Volunteers on 25 August 1862 as a private. With the 19th, he would have seen an unusual amount of active duty, engaging in the battles at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spottsylvania Court House, and many other battles and skirmishes.
