Organized in September 1861, the regiment was attached to General T.W. Sherman's expedition to Port Royal, South Carolina, landing at Hilton Head on November 8th, where they began building fortifications. Adjutant records show that William Linnell (b. ca 1842) enlisted when the regiment formed. In the spring of 1862, they moved south to Tybee Island took a prominent role in the attack and capture of Fort Pulaski.
Until the spring of 1864, the regiment mostly served in guard duty at Hilton Head, Beaufort, and Jacksonville, Florida. On May 4th, the 8th Maine moved to Bermuda Hundred and took part in the operation of the Army of the James. Like many of his compatriots, Linnell was mustered out of service on 16 September 1864.
The 8th Maine fought in several engagements of the Petersburg campaign, including the Battles of Cold Harbor, Chaffin's Farm, Fair Oaks, and others. They were present at Lee's Surrender at Appomattox Court House, and remained in service until early 1866.
