M1840 cavalry saber with an unusually ornate, acid-etched and gold-washed blade. Philadelphia: W. H. Horstmann & Sons, ca. 1843-1863. Blade manufactured [Solingen, Germany: Gebruder Weyersburg, n.d.] Blade 33 1/8 in. Overall 43 1/2 in. long.

This is a highly scarce instance of a practical cavalry saber, complete in the correct, unassuming scabbard, outfitted with embellishments usually reserved for high-grade officer's presentation swords, such a gold wash to the blade and gilding to the brass guard. The blade does not appear to exhibit battlefield wear. The etchings remain in remarkable condition and include several stands of arms and armor, botanical symbols, and patriotic motifs, with a prominent "U S" to one side and an eagle atop a federal shield, "E Pluribus Unum" ribband in beak, to the other.
