Vignetted studio bust portrait albumen CDV. Milford, [Massachusetts]: Wires, N.d. Photographer's imprint printed to mount verso. Period ink signature reads: "With regards of H.N.Comey."
A bust portrait of Henry Newton Comey (1840-1932), an officer in the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry. His gaze is pensively directed off towards the side of the photographer’s lens. Dressed in a suit and tie, rather than his uniform, Comey’s signature mustache is still visible, drawing a similar likeness to his other documented portraits.
Mustering into Company G on 5 May 1861 as a private, Comey rose through the ranks of the Massachusetts 2nd Infantry, serving throughout the entirety of the war and in significant battles such as the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Chancelorsville. After being promoted to 2nd lieutenant on 1 November 1862, and then 1st lieutenant on 6 June 1862, Comey was marked as wounded in battle at the Battle of Gettysburg on 3 July 1863. He would return to service and eventually be promoted to the position of Captain of Company E of the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry on 24 May 1864. After the war, Comey was an involved GAR member for the remainder of his life, holding various officer positions throughout his home state of Massachusetts. He published his memoirs and letters from his time of service, titled A Legacy of Valor, providing a valuable perspective into the lives of soldiers within the Union army, both at camp and at battle.
An excellent signed CDV of an impressionable officer.
