United States Christian Commission. Second Report of the Committee of Maryland. Baltimore: Sherwood & Co., 1863. 8vo. Original wrappers.

Bound with Battle of Gettysburg and the Christian Commission by Andrew B. Cross. N.p., 1865. Missing last two pages. Includes map of hospitals on the Gettysburg battlefield.

A report from the Baltimore Christian Association, an auxiliary to the United States Christian Commission, summarizing what the group did between 5 November 1862 and 1 September 1863. During this period, the Association attended to the hospitals at the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, of which the additional pamphlet by Cross provides more detail into what the Christian Commission accomplished there. After recounting the battles the Association attended to, it discusses the estimated work of the commission and the statistics of labor, providing insight into how the Christian Commission functions.

The U.S. Christian Commission was established by the National Committee of the YMCA following the First Battle of Bull Run. It provided supplies, medical services and religious literature to the Union during the Civil War, distributing more than $6 million worth of goods and supplies. The Commission consisted of seminary students but also just concerned Christians who wanted to help the war efforts without picking up a weapon. Eventually, a women's auxiliary was even founded to provide additional support. Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women, was one of these volunteers in the Ladies Christian Commission.
