SIGNED VIEW OF IRON BRIGADE OFFICER WHO WAS WOUNDED AND CAPTURED AT GETTYSBURG

Vignetted half-length albumen CDV portrait of Henry A. Morrow, wearing the one-star shoulder boards of a brigadier general. N.p., ca. 1860s. Period ink inscription to recto reads: "Henry A. Morrow / Bvt. Major Gen. / U.S. W[C?]?"

A vignetted half-length albumen CDV depicting Henry A. Morrow facing slightly to the viewer’s left. Morrow wears a dark double-breasted Union uniform coat with two rows of buttons and shoulder boards bearing a single star, indicating the rank of brigadier general. His right hand is tucked into the front of his waistcoat in a hand-in-waistcoat pose.

Henry A. Morrow (1829–1891) was a Union Army officer who rose from regimental command to brevet major general during the American Civil War. He served as colonel of the 24th Michigan Infantry, part of the famed Iron Brigade, and was wounded and captured at the Battle of Gettysburg while leading his regiment in heavy fighting on the first day. After being exchanged, he continued in service and later commanded a brigade.
