An exceptional Civil War ordnance artifact, consisting of a fully intact, regulation-pattern gunner's haversack manufactured from heavy bridle leather. This specimen stands as a premier example of Federal heavy artillery and field piece accoutrements, explicitly produced at one of the Union's top military manufacturing complexes.

The face of the scalloped leather outer flap features a beautifully struck, multi-line federal ordnance stamp that reads "Watertown / Arsenal / 1864 / U.S." in sharp serif lettering. This flawless marking establishes a definitive wartime manufacturing provenance, tracking its production to the critical Massachusetts facility during the height of the 1864 campaigns. Raising the outer flap reveals a spacious, unlined main interior pocket of natural, undyed russet tan leather that exhibits honest powder staining and age-appropriate mottling. The rear of the pouch showcases a robust suspension design engineering, featuring its original, full-length adjustable leather shoulder strap permanently secured by two dense patterns of multi-row vertical stitching and outfitted with its original blackened iron roller buckle.

Unlike the standard canvas haversacks issued to frontline infantrymen for carrying personal rations, a gunner's haversack was a specialized tool of the artillery service. Strapped over the shoulder of the cannoneer, this rigid leather pouch was utilized to transport explosive powder charges and paper cartridges directly from the ammunition chest at the limber up to the burning muzzle of the field piece. To prevent catastrophic stray sparks or friction from igniting the loose powder during a frantic firing sequence, these pouches were strictly fabricated from heavy, vegetable-tanned leather and featured deep, overlapping protective flaps. Given the brutal nature of combat operations and the heavy post-war commercial consumption of surplus leather goods, finding a complete Civil War artillery haversack that retains its original, un-shortened shoulder strap and functional iron buckles is a genuine rarity. It would be difficult to find a better example.

The haversack is in remarkably fine condition. The black-dyed exterior bridle leather remains strong and pliable, retaining a brilliant period finish with a tight surface crazing pattern consistent with standard age. The closure billet strap and the suspension strap are complete, showing no dry rot, brittle tearing, or post-war modifications.
