An individual cavalryman’s ordnance ensemble comprising a leather carbine shoulder sling rig and an attached Model 1861 cavalry carbine cartridge box, ca 1861–1865. The cartridge box features an exceptionally clear, original oval manufacturer’s stamp on the internal flap.
A highly desirable and complete rig documenting the elite equipment carried by Union horsemen during the Great Rebellion. This set centers on the heavy black leather carbine sling, designed to be worn across the trooper's shoulder to carry the weight of breech-loading cavalry weapons like the Sharps, Spencer, or Burnside carbine. The rig retains its original, massive iron roller buckle, leather slider, and a heavy brass tip tip-plate secured by iron rivets.
Crucially, the sling carries an authentic Model 1861 cavalry carbine cartridge box. Purpose-built to carry twenty rounds of heavy caliber carbine ammunition, the box features a wide outer flap secured by a leather latch tab to a brass finial button, alongside two smaller roller buckles mounted to the lower frame to secure the inner canvas or tin inserts. The inner protection flap preserves a crisp oval manufacturer’s ink-embossed arsenal stamp reading: Manufactured By H. G. Condict & Co. / New York. Henry G. Condict was a prominent federal ordnance contractor based out of Newark, New Jersey, and New York City, securing high-volume War Department contracts throughout 1861 and 1862 to equip newly raised volunteer cavalry regiments. Complete horseman rigs that successfully preserve both the heavy shoulder sling and an explicitly marked Condict carbine box are frustratingly scarce.
The cavalry rig is in good to very good, entirely original condition. The heavy leather shoulder sling remains remarkably flexible, showing honest field wear, light surface crazing, and minor edge scuffing that accentuates its service history. The iron roller buckle and brass tip retain a beautiful, untouched dark historic patina. The cartridge box remains structurally sound with tight stitching along the side gussets, exhibiting typical age-related surface cracking to the outer flap.
