An American traditional academic realistic painter, Don Troiani is a well-known figure among historians and collectors alike. Known for evocative and historically accurate depictions of the Civil War and Revolutionary War, Troiani’s art exhibits fine craftsmanship and advanced topical research. Troiani took up his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and New York City’s Art Students League between 1967 and 1971, during which his detailed style of subjects was refined. Using a distinct oil and watercolor approach, his depictions of American soldiers are often outfitted with detailed examples of military uniforms, insignia, and weapons, which reflect the vast amount of research Troiani’s pieces exhibit. As a militaria collector himself, Troiani’s work has been used extensively as educational references in book compilations, illustrated guides, reference materials, and museum and government publications.
