Solid iron Confederate artillery bolt. Approx. 7 in. (diameter) x 14 in.
A scarce piece of Confederate ordnance, designed for use with the 7 in. Brooke rifle. These bolts were fired upon Union ironclads, whose hulls were largely impervious to explosive artillery shells, with the intention of colliding against as large an area as possible with significant force, hence the snub nose and solid composition. The large copper sabot is connected to the base via 3 studs and a large square head bolt, in a system known as "Type II Tennessee".
