A captain raises his sword and urges his fellow soldiers on. To his left, the color bearer hoists the regimental colors of the 7th Regiment Florida Volunteers. The men prepare themselves for the Battle of Dallas, Georgia, some with looks of determination, others with weary dread.

The 7th Florida Infantry was organized in Gainesville in April 1862 and served in the Florida Brigade of the Army of Tennessee. Notably, Company K was composed primarily of men who had served in a militia Coast Guard company before the war. The regiment fought in the many gruesome battles of the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater, from the Battle of Chickamauga to Nashville. Here, the Battle of Dallas is depicted - one of the series of battles during the Atlanta Campaign. What was intended to be a probe accidentally turned into a full-scale assault on John Logan's XV Corps and resulted in heavy Confederate losses.

Rick Reeves (b. 1959) of Tampa, Florida, is a master of American military paintings, devoting exceptional detail to the uniforms, flags, and landscapes. His paintings reveal a profound understanding of the battlefield and a sensitivity to the pivotal moments of war.
