Dark wood hand-carved smoking pipe. Bowl 2 x 1 1/2 in., stem 3 3/4 in., overall 5 3/4 in.
A finely carved pipe featuring an intricate cannon worked along the stem. The bowl is decorated with two crossed flags, stars, and laurel sprays surrounding the initials “G.S.C.”
Pipe carving was a common pastime among Civil War soldiers, who often filled idle hours by fashioning personal objects that reflected their service. While the identity of “G.S.C.” remains uncertain, the workmanship of this piece is uncommonly fine. The presence of the cannon perhaps suggests the hand of an artilleryman.
Condition: Overall, fine. A portion of one wheel is in need of restoration.
