GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC (GAR) VETERAN’S HAND-CARVED COMMEMORATIVE WALL SHELF, WITH XIX ARMY CORPS BADGE
American, ca. 1880s–1900s; carved and applied hardwoods.
A handcrafted postwar veteran’s display in the form of the Nineteenth Army Corps badge, employed here as the backboard for a shallow shelf and embellished with applied relief devices of service: central field gun with stacked shot; drum and crossed sticks; bugle; haversack and canteen on crossed straps; crossed handguns; camp tent; and small corps badge appliqués arranged above and below the shelf. At the crest, a Pennsylvania-shaped keystone bears the raised initials “PV” over a small block carved “US,” likely denoting the piece was made by or for a Pennsylvania Volunteers veteran.
A well-preserved example of GAR veteran folk art whose iconography clearly signals XIX Corps service, enhanced by the Pennsylvania keystone and the array of finely rendered martial motifs.
