A compelling group of four (4) contemporary counterfeit Confederate notes.

The limitations faced by the Confederate government and its printers, including a shortage of supplies and sophisticated equipment, lent a comparatively crude appearance to most banknotes, making them fertile targets for contemporary counterfeiters. This was especially true in the early war before the value of Confederate currency was significantly eroded by hyperinflation.

Notes include:

1. CT-16 contemporary counterfeit Confederate States of America $50 note. Richmond, 2 September 1861. Plate Ax, no. 935. Graded "40 Extremely Fine" by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG).

Other examples are printed "Fac simile of Confederate Note" to lower margin, however, it has been neatly trimmed in this example. Printed on paper with notable red fibers in the paper, it was a contemporary counterfeit probably printed by Samuel Upham of Philadelphia.

2. CT-20 contemporary counterfeit Confederate States of America $20 note. Richmond, 2 September 1861. Plate 6, no. 21865. Graded "64 Choice Uncirculated" by PMG, noting its "exceptional paper quality."

3. CT-20 contemporary counterfeit Confederate States of America $20 note. Richmond, 2 September 1861. Plate 6, no. 50238. Graded "64 Choice Uncirculated" by PMG. Provenance: Bullmaximus Collection.

4. CT-20 contemporary counterfeit Confederate States of America $20 note. Richmond, 2 September 1861. Plate 6, no. 8694. Graded "30 Very Fine" by PMG.
